Zox Innovative Retail App:
Uniting Creativity & Accessibility
Summary
Zox is a sock brand that partners with artists to create unique, high-quality designs. They are seeking a brand kit and retail shopping app that is visually accessible for individuals with color blindness and visual impairments to fill a gap in the market for an accessible shopping experience.
My Role
Design an accessible retail shopping app from research to launch, including brand kit, product designs, user experience, and user interface.
Sock Designs
To emphasize accessibility for visual impairments and color blindness, I designed a vibrant animal print sock collection with bold color contrasts for enhanced visibility, alongside a high-contrast black-and-white collection. Both collections prioritize visual differentiation to ensure accessibility without compromising style or creativity. The full set features 11 unique sock designs: five colored and six black-and-white, each crafted to promote inclusivity through thoughtful, high-contrast design.
Accessible Font & Color Testing
To ensure the accessibility of my branding color palette and font choices for individuals with visual impairments, I conducted thorough testing. Using an accessibility type calculator, I assessed font legibility at 20/20 and 20/70 viewing distances to ensure readability across varying visual acuity levels.
I also simulated how brand colors appeared under different types of color blindness, prioritizing contrast and differentiation while preserving the brand’s aesthetic. I provided minimum font size recommendations and identified color combinations that ensured optimal contrast and readability, ensuring the brand’s materials remain accessible to a wide audience.
Site Maps & User Journies
To support the app’s conceptualization and design, I developed three detailed user journeys, each representing personas with distinct traits, shopping experience levels, and visual impairments. These personas highlighted unique needs and challenges with mobile shopping apps.
Through thorough research, I predicted each persona’s behavior and decision-making when interacting with the app. Personalized sitemaps mapped their anticipated navigation paths and informed wireframe development, ensuring a user-centric design tailored to various accessibility requirements.
